Genessy’s Blog

Hi Everyone, My name is Genessy Simo, I was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ with Dominican parents. Im 22 years old currently in my Junior year majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in Psychology, my future career goal is to become a Criminal Psychologist. My interest in Criminal Justice came about after seeing my two older sisters chose different paths in studies such as business and medical. While taking Criminal Justice courses and learning about the statistics I became interested in wanting to know the “Why” so it pushed me to become a psychology minor. Im also currently working as a Clerk at Estes Express Lines which is great because I have ample time to do school work.

Growing up my father put a lot of pressure on me with having to do great in school. It was very difficult as a kid being around my cousins that were allowed to play around all day while I had to read a new book every week. At the time I was attending PS#30,  a bilingual school which was also a struggle when it came to confusing writing strategies in English compared to Spanish. After attending that school from the 2-4th grade in order to take me out of the school my parents left me back a year, this was the most significant impact in my development. I was then transferred to PS#39 where my grades began going through the roof allowing me to graduate with honors. Once i saw what I was capable of doing on my own I became my own role model and year after year I was in competition with myself.

Im a strong believer in school being the only path to success and although some may prove those whom have succeeded in life without it, I feel as though that was just luck. No one in my family has graduated College and I strive to be the first. I have adult family members that have yet to figure out what they want to do in life and I use them as an example of what I don’t want to be. I believe literacy is very important in my personal life. I use it on a day to tay basis whether it’s speaking or even writing a resume. I continue to sponsor and inspire my own literacy development.
